How it works
There is no single ideal weight, and the most useful thing this page can do is show you four published formulas disagreeing with each other by several kilograms. That spread is the honest answer.
Where these formulas came from
Devine's formula was published in 1974 to calculate drug dosages, not health targets. Robinson, Miller and Hamwi are variations on the same idea. None was derived from research into what weight makes people healthiest, and it is worth knowing that before treating any of them as a goal.
What they ignore
Build, frame size, muscle mass, age and body composition — all of it. A muscular person will be told they are overweight by every formula here, and by BMI too. They are rough population guides, not descriptions of an individual.
The BMI range alongside
The weight range corresponding to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height is shown as well. It is broader than any single formula's answer, which is itself informative: health does not come down to one number.
A better question
Body composition, waist measurement, fitness and how you feel are all more useful than a target weight. If you want a single number to watch, waist circumference tracks health risk better than weight does.
Ideal weight calculator — questions
Which formula is right?
None of them, exactly. They were built for drug dosing and disagree with each other, which is why all four are shown.
Why do they ignore build?
Because they only take height and sex as inputs. That is a real limitation, not an oversight you can work around.
Is BMI better?
It is broader and gives a range rather than a point, but it also cannot tell muscle from fat.
What should I use instead?
Waist measurement, body composition and fitness all track health better than a target weight.
Is this medical advice?
No. It is arithmetic on published formulas.
