How it works

Two subtitle formats dominate: SRT, which video players and editors expect, and WebVTT, which HTML5 video requires. They are nearly identical, which is exactly why converting by hand is such an annoying waste of time. Subtitles being a second or two out is the other common complaint, and that is a bulk edit nobody wants to do by hand either.

What actually differs

VTT begins with a WEBVTT header, uses a full stop before the milliseconds where SRT uses a comma, and does not number its cues. Everything else — the timing line, the text, the blank line between cues — is the same. Those three differences are the whole conversion.

Shifting timings

Enter a positive number to push subtitles later, or a negative one to pull them earlier. Every cue moves by the same amount, which fixes the usual case of captions that are consistently out of sync. Timings are never pushed below zero.

Direction is detected

The format is worked out from the header and the millisecond separator, so you normally do not have to choose. You can force a direction if a file is unusual.

What is not carried across

VTT styling blocks, region definitions and positioning cues have no SRT equivalent and are dropped when converting to SRT. Plain subtitle text and timings always survive.

FAQ

SRT to VTT converter — questions

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

VTT has a WEBVTT header, uses a full stop before milliseconds instead of a comma, and drops the cue numbers.

How do I fix subtitles that are out of sync?

Enter the offset in seconds — negative to pull them earlier, positive to push them later. Every cue shifts together.

Will my styling survive?

No. VTT styling and positioning have no SRT equivalent and are dropped in that direction.
