How it works

Markdown is what README files, issue trackers, wikis and static sites want. HTML is what you get when you copy from a web page or export from a CMS. Converting between them by hand is tedious and the result is usually full of leftover markup.

What converts cleanly

Headings, paragraphs, bold and italic, links, images, inline code, code blocks, blockquotes, horizontal rules and both kinds of list, including nesting. These have exact Markdown equivalents and come out as you would write them by hand.

What cannot survive

Markdown has no way to express styling, classes, layout divs, spans, or anything visual. Those tags are unwrapped — their text is kept and the tag itself discarded — and the count is reported so you know something was simplified. Scripts and style blocks are removed entirely.

Tables

Table text is preserved but not rendered as a Markdown table, because HTML tables frequently use merged cells and nesting that Markdown's table syntax genuinely cannot represent. Simple tables are quicker to re-mark by hand than to have mangled.

Parsed, not pattern-matched

The HTML is parsed by your browser's own parser rather than processed with regular expressions, so malformed and deeply nested markup is handled the way a browser would handle it.

FAQ

HTML to Markdown — questions

Will my tables convert?

Table text is kept but not turned into Markdown table syntax, because HTML tables often use structures Markdown cannot express.

What happens to CSS classes and styling?

They are dropped. Markdown has no way to express them.

Is my HTML uploaded?

No. It is parsed and converted in your browser.
