How it works

Comparing job offers means comparing figures quoted in different units: one advertised hourly, one annually, one as a day rate. Converting between them needs assumptions about hours and weeks, and those assumptions are exactly where the comparison goes wrong.

The assumptions matter more than the maths

A 40-hour week and 52 paid weeks are the defaults, which suits salaried employment where holiday is paid. Contract and freelance work is different: if you are only paid for weeks you actually work, set the weeks down to 46 or 47 to account for holiday and public holidays, and the hourly equivalent changes substantially.

Day rates

A day is taken as five per week. Contract day rates often look far higher than an equivalent salary, and this is why comparing them directly is misleading — the day rate has to cover unpaid holiday, sick leave, pension and periods between contracts.

These are gross figures

Nothing is deducted. Income tax, social contributions, pension and student loan repayments vary enormously by country and circumstance, and no general calculator can estimate them honestly. Use your country's official tax calculator for take-home pay.

Currency does not matter

The figures are just numbers, so the conversion works identically whatever you are paid in.

FAQ

Salary calculator — questions

Is this take-home pay?

No. These are gross figures before tax and deductions, which vary too much by country to estimate generally.

How do I compare a contract day rate to a salary?

Reduce the weeks worked to account for unpaid holiday, and remember the rate must also cover pension, sick leave and gaps between contracts.

What hours should I use?

Whatever you actually work. The default of 40 hours over 52 weeks suits salaried employment with paid holiday.
