How it works

Spreadsheets are where organisations keep the data they care about most: customer lists, payroll, orders, patient records. Converting one to CSV for an import is routine, and uploading it to an unknown website to do so is the kind of thing that turns up in breach reports.

One CSV per sheet

CSV holds exactly one table and has no concept of multiple sheets, so a workbook with several comes back as several files. There is no way around that — it is a limitation of the format, not of this tool.

What does not survive

Formulas are converted to their last calculated values, which is normally what you want. Formatting, colours, merged cells, charts, comments and multiple header rows have no CSV equivalent and are lost. If the data matters more than the presentation, that is fine; if not, keep the original.

Choosing a separator

Comma is standard. Semicolon is what Excel expects in locales where the comma is the decimal separator — if your spreadsheet reopens the CSV with every row crammed into one column, this is why. Tab is the safest when the data itself contains punctuation.

Formats it reads

XLSX and XLSM from modern Excel, the older XLS format, and ODS from LibreOffice and OpenOffice.

FAQ

Excel to CSV — questions

What happens to multiple sheets?

Each becomes its own CSV file, because CSV cannot represent more than one table.

Are formulas kept?

Their calculated values are kept; the formulas themselves are not, since CSV has no way to store them.

Why does Excel show everything in one column?

Your locale probably expects semicolons. Choose semicolon as the separator.

Is my spreadsheet uploaded?

No. It is parsed and converted entirely in your browser.
