JSON to Excel

Turn a list of JSON records straight into an XLSX workbook.

How it works

API responses arrive as JSON and the people who need to read them want a spreadsheet. Converting via CSV works but loses types and invites Excel's import guessing; writing a real XLSX avoids both.

What shape it expects

An array of objects, which is what a list endpoint returns. The keys across the records become the columns. A single object is treated as a one-row sheet.

Why not go through CSV

Excel guesses at types when importing CSV, which is how long identifiers become scientific notation and codes like 1-2 become dates. Writing XLSX directly puts numbers in as numbers and text in as text, so nothing is silently reinterpreted.

Nested values

A value that is itself an object or an array is written into the cell as JSON text, because a cell holds one value and cannot hold a structure. Flatten your data first if those fields matter.

Going the other way

The Excel to JSON tool converts back, and the Excel to CSV tool is there if a plain text table is what you actually need.

FAQ

JSON to Excel — questions

What JSON does it accept?

An array of objects, or a single object. Keys become columns.

Why is this better than converting to CSV?

Excel guesses types when importing CSV, mangling long numbers and codes. XLSX stores the types directly.

What happens to nested objects?

They are written into the cell as JSON text, since a cell cannot hold a structure.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The workbook is built in your browser.
