How it works

Every platform wants a different shape, and footage shot in one shape rarely suits another. The usual online answer either stretches the picture, which looks wrong, or crops it, which cuts people's heads off. This fits the whole frame inside the new shape and pads the gaps, so nothing is distorted and nothing is lost.

Fit and pad, not stretch or crop

The video is scaled down until it fits entirely inside the target shape, then black bars fill the remainder. Everything that was in the original frame is still there, at the correct proportions. If you would rather crop tightly to the subject, that is a different job and this tool does not pretend to do it.

Which shape to pick

9:16 is vertical full-screen — Reels, Shorts, TikTok. 4:5 is the tall feed post that takes up the most space while scrolling. 1:1 is the classic square. 16:9 is widescreen, for YouTube and anything played on a screen rather than a phone.

Width, and why it matters more than you think

1080 px wide is the sensible default for social platforms, which re-encode whatever you give them anyway. Going higher mostly costs you encoding time and file size for quality the platform will throw away.

It re-encodes, so it takes time

Changing the frame size means every frame is redrawn, which means a full re-encode on your own device. A short clip is quick; a long one is not.

FAQ

Resize a video — questions

Will my video be stretched or squashed?

No. It is scaled to fit and padded with black, so the proportions are always correct.

Can it crop to the subject instead of padding?

Not here — this tool fits the whole frame. Cropping to a subject needs a judgement call about what to lose.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The resize runs in your browser with ffmpeg.

What resolution should I choose?

1080 px wide suits every major social platform. Higher costs encoding time for quality the platform will re-compress away.
