How it works
RAR and 7z are the formats that stop people, because unlike ZIP no operating system opens them out of the box. The usual answer is to install software you will use once, or to upload the archive somewhere — and archives are exactly the kind of file that contains everything at once.
What it opens
RAR, 7z, TAR, GZ, TGZ, BZ2, XZ, CAB, ISO, LHA and ZIP. That covers essentially everything you are likely to be sent. ZIP is also handled by the dedicated ZIP tool here, which is lighter if that is all you need.
Folder structure is kept
Files come back with their paths intact, so an archive organised into folders stays organised. Up to 300 files are returned at a time.
Password-protected archives
Cannot be opened. This tool does not ask for a password, and an encrypted archive is detected and reported rather than failing confusingly. That is a deliberate limit: a browser tool that accepted archive passwords would be an awkward thing to trust.
The engine
libarchive, the same library the command-line tools use, compiled to WebAssembly and served from this site. It is about a megabyte and your browser caches it after the first use.
