How it works
Find-and-replace is built into every editor, but not every piece of text lives in an editor. Sometimes it is in an email, a form field or a chat message, and opening an application for one substitution is overkill.
Three matching modes
Plain text matches exactly, punctuation included. Ignore case matches regardless of capitalisation. Regular expression treats the search as a pattern, which is powerful and unforgiving in equal measure.
Deleting rather than replacing
Leave the replacement box empty and every match is removed. That is the quickest way to strip a repeated prefix, a tracking parameter or stray markup.
Match modes
Plain text finds exactly the characters you type. Ignore case also matches the same text in different capitals. Regular expression treats your search as a JavaScript regular expression, matched case-sensitively, everywhere it occurs.
Replacing
Every match is replaced at once and the number of replacements is shown. Leave the replacement empty to delete every match. In regular-expression mode, $1, $2 and so on insert capture groups and $& inserts the whole match; in the other two modes the replacement is used exactly as typed.
Find and replace — questions
Does it support regular expressions?
Yes. Choose regular expression mode and the search is treated as a pattern. Invalid patterns are reported rather than silently ignored.
How many replacements does it make?
All of them, and it tells you how many were made.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The replacement runs in the page.
