Speak and watch the level move. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent.

How it works

The five minutes before a call is the worst time to discover the wrong microphone is selected. This shows the level and the waveform live, so you can see whether sound is arriving and how loud it is.

What to look for

Speaking normally should push the meter into the middle of its range. If it barely moves, the input gain is too low or the wrong device is selected. If it sits at the top even when you are quiet, the gain is too high and you will clip and distort.

The waveform

The trace shows the actual audio signal. A flat line means nothing is arriving at all. A trace that is visibly squared off at the top and bottom is clipping, which no amount of processing will fix afterwards — reduce the input level instead.

Which device is being used

The device name, sample rate and channel count are shown, so you can confirm the browser picked the microphone you expected rather than a webcam's built-in one. If it is wrong, change it in your browser's site settings and start again.

Echo cancellation is turned off

The test requests the raw signal with echo cancellation and noise suppression disabled, so you are seeing what the microphone actually produces rather than what the browser's processing makes of it. That is what you want when diagnosing a fault.

Nothing is recorded

The audio is analysed frame by frame in the page and discarded immediately. There is no recording, no file and no upload, and the microphone is released the moment you turn it off.

FAQ

Microphone test — questions

Does it record me?

No. The signal is analysed live and thrown away — nothing is stored or transmitted.

How do I change which microphone is used?

Through your browser's site permissions. Change it there, then turn the microphone off and on again here.

What if the meter does not move at all?

Either the wrong device is selected, the microphone is muted in hardware or the operating system is blocking access to it.

What does clipping look like?

The waveform flattens at the top and bottom. Reduce the input gain in your system sound settings.

Does the microphone stay on?

Only while you leave it on. The Turn it off button releases it immediately, and closing the tab does too.
