Webcam test
See yourself, check the resolution and frame rate, and save a still if you want one.
- The camera feed stays in this page — nothing is uploaded
- No sign-up, no quotas, free to use as often as you like
How it works
Testing a webcam by joining a call is a slow way to find out it does not work. This shows the picture immediately, along with what the camera is actually delivering rather than what it claims on the box.
Resolution and frame rate
The device name and resolution are read from the stream itself, and the frame rate is measured from real delivered frames rather than taken from the camera's own claim. Cameras often report 30 frames per second and deliver far fewer in poor light, because the sensor holds each frame open longer to gather enough light. Seeing that measured figure drop is usually a lighting problem, not a fault.
If the picture does not appear
Check that no other application is holding the camera — many systems allow only one at a time. Then check the browser's site permissions, and whether a privacy shutter or a hardware switch is closed.
Saving a still
The still button captures the current frame as a PNG and downloads it. It is drawn from the video in the page, so the image is created on your device and never uploaded.
Nothing is recorded
The video is displayed and nothing else. There is no recording, no upload and no storage, and the camera light goes out as soon as you turn it off.
Webcam test — questions
Is the video recorded or uploaded?
No. It is displayed in the page and discarded. Only the still you explicitly save becomes a file, and that is saved to your own device.
Why is my camera unavailable?
Usually another application already has it open, since most systems allow only one at a time. Close video calls and camera apps and try again.
Why is the measured frame rate lower than advertised?
In low light the sensor holds each frame open longer, which reduces the real frame rate. More light usually fixes it.
Can I choose which camera to use?
Through your browser's site permissions. Change it there, then turn the camera off and on again.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, and it will normally open the front camera.
