How it works

Adding a line of text to a picture is one of those jobs that is faster than opening an image editor but harder than it should be online, mostly because the free tools stamp their own branding onto the result. This adds only what you type.

Click to place it

Type the caption and it appears on the preview. Click anywhere on the picture to move it there. Long captions wrap automatically and stay centred on the point you chose.

Making text readable over a photograph

White text on a light sky is invisible. A drop shadow, which is the default, keeps light text legible over almost any background without hiding the picture. The solid box is the stronger option for busy backgrounds and is what news graphics use. Turn both off only when you control the background.

How this differs from the other two text tools

The watermark tool repeats faded text across a picture to deter reuse. The meme generator puts fixed captions at the top and bottom in the traditional style. This places one opaque caption wherever you want it — which is what you want for a label, a credit or an annotation.

Font

The caption uses a standard sans-serif face already present on your device, so nothing is downloaded and no typeface is redistributed by this site.

FAQ

Add text to an image — questions

Will this site add its own watermark?

No. The only text on the result is what you typed.

How do I move the text?

Click anywhere on the preview and the caption moves there.

Can I choose a font?

Not yet. The caption uses a standard sans-serif face from your own device.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The text is drawn in your browser.
