How it works

Passport and visa photos have exact dimensions, and photo shops charge a surprising amount for a crop and a print. The dimensions are the easy part to get right, and this does them precisely — but they are not the only requirement, which is worth saying before anything else.

Read your own country's rules first

Dimensions are only part of it. Most authorities also specify how much of the frame the head must fill, the eye position, a neutral expression, no glasses or head covering except on religious grounds, even lighting and a plain background of a particular colour. This tool crops and sizes accurately; it cannot judge any of the rest. Check the official guidance for the country you are applying to.

The sizes offered

35 × 45 mm covers the UK, the EU, India and Australia. 51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 inches) is the United States. 50 × 70 mm is Canada. 33 × 48 mm is the common Chinese visa size. Everything is produced at 300 dpi, the resolution printers and online applications expect.

The printable sheet

Choosing the sheet arranges as many copies as fit onto a 6 × 4 inch print with faint cutting guides — the standard cheap photo print size, so you can order one and cut them out. That is the part that usually saves the money.

Starting photo

Use a straight-on photo taken against a plain wall in even, indirect light, with the face centred and the shoulders visible. Crop generously here rather than tightly — most rejections are about head size within the frame, not image quality.

FAQ

Passport photo maker — questions

Will this photo definitely be accepted?

It will be the right size and resolution. Acceptance also depends on head size, expression, background and lighting, which no cropping tool can judge — check your country's official guidance.

What resolution does it produce?

300 dpi, which is what printers and online applications expect.

Can I print several on one sheet?

Yes. The sheet option fills a standard 6 × 4 inch print with copies and cutting guides.
