How it works
The three common ways of writing a colour suit different jobs. HEX is compact and what design tools hand you. RGB maps to how screens actually work. HSL is the one humans can reason about, because adjusting lightness or saturation is a single number.
Why HSL is worth knowing
In HSL, a lighter version of a colour is the same hue and saturation with a higher lightness. In HEX or RGB the same change means recalculating three values that bear no obvious relationship to what you wanted.
What it accepts
Three or six digit hex with or without the hash, rgb() or rgba(), and hsl() or hsla(). Alpha is ignored, since it is written identically in every notation.
Color converter — questions
Does it handle transparency?
Alpha values are accepted in the input but not converted, as alpha is written the same way in every notation.
Can I paste a colour name such as red?
Not currently — give a hex, rgb() or hsl() value.
Is anything sent to a server?
No, conversion happens in the page.
