How it works

Regular expressions are famously easier to write than to read, and almost impossible to get right first time. Testing against real input is the only reliable way to know what a pattern actually does.

Matches and groups

Every match is listed in order. Where the pattern has capture groups, their contents are shown beside the match, which is usually the part you actually wanted to extract.

Flags

Global finds every match rather than stopping at the first. Ignore case does what it says. Multiline changes the start and end anchors so they match at each line rather than only at the boundaries of the whole text.

A practical limit

Listing stops at 500 matches, which is more than enough to tell whether a pattern is behaving, without freezing the page on a pathological input.

FAQ

Regex tester — questions

Which regex flavour is this?

JavaScript's, which is close to PCRE but not identical. Lookbehind and named groups are supported in current browsers.

Why does my pattern match nothing?

Check the flags first — without the global flag only the first match is found. Invalid patterns are reported with the parser's error.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Matching happens in the page.
