How it works
Reversed video is a staple of short-form content: things unbreaking, water returning to a glass, someone walking backwards. It is also genuinely useful for studying a fast movement from the other direction.
Why it must be short
Playing a clip backwards means the last frame has to be available before the first one is written, so the entire video is held in memory at once. That is a hard constraint of the operation, not a limit we chose. Anything above about 60 MB is refused before you wait for a failure.
Reversed sound
Audio can be reversed with the picture, which produces the familiar backwards-speech effect, or removed entirely. Music reversed sounds atmospheric; speech reversed sounds like nonsense, which is usually the joke.
Trim first
Because the size limit is real, trim the section you want before reversing rather than reversing the whole clip and trimming afterwards. The trim tool on this site does it without re-uploading anything.
It re-encodes
Every frame is rewritten in the new order, so expect the wait to be similar to any other full re-encode.
Reverse a video — questions
Why is there a size limit?
Reversing needs the whole clip in memory at once, because the last frame is written first. That is inherent to the operation.
Can I reverse the sound too?
Yes, or remove it. Reversed speech is unintelligible, which is usually the intent.
My clip is too big — what now?
Trim the part you want first, then reverse that.
Is my video uploaded?
No. It is reversed in your browser.
