How it works

Splitting a video is usually about a limit someone else set: a platform that takes sixty-second clips, a messaging app with a size cap, or a long recording that needs to arrive in manageable pieces.

Two ways to divide

By count gives you that many equal parts, which suits breaking a recording into chapters. By length gives pieces of a fixed duration, which is what platform limits need — sixty seconds each, for instance, with the last piece shorter.

Each piece is a complete video

Every part is encoded as its own playable MP4 with its own audio, not a fragment that needs reassembling. They are numbered in order so the sequence is unambiguous.

It takes time, proportionally

Each piece is encoded separately, so a clip split into five parts takes roughly as long as re-encoding the whole clip once. A maximum of twenty pieces is produced at a time.

Cuts are exact

Pieces are re-encoded rather than copied, so each starts precisely where it should. Copying would snap every cut to the nearest keyframe and make the joins uneven.
