How it works

A document you have to type a password into every time becomes tiresome once it is no longer sensitive, or once it is being filed somewhere already secure. Removing the password is straightforward — provided you have it.

You need the password

This tool decrypts a document using the password you supply, then saves an unencrypted copy. It does not attempt to break, guess or bypass encryption. If you do not have the password, this will not help you, and that is deliberate. If the document also has a separate permissions password restricting printing, copying or editing, you need that one to remove the restrictions.

Why that limit is the right one

Tools that strip protection from documents you cannot open exist, and using one on someone else's file is not something this site is going to help with. Removing protection from your own document, using your own password, is an ordinary thing to want.

Nothing is transmitted

The document and the password are both handled in the page by qpdf compiled to WebAssembly. Typing a password into a website is normally a bad idea; here there is nowhere for it to go.

What comes out

An identical document with the encryption removed. Pages, text, images, form fields and bookmarks are all preserved — only the protection is gone.

FAQ

Remove a PDF password — questions

Can it open a PDF if I do not know the password?

No. It decrypts using the password you provide; it does not break encryption.

Is the content changed?

No. Pages, text, images and form fields are preserved. Only the encryption is removed.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. Both the file and the password stay in your browser.

Why would I remove a password?

Usually because the document is being filed somewhere already secure, or is no longer sensitive and the prompt has become a nuisance.
