How it works

Plain text is the most durable format there is and the least convenient to hand to somebody. A PDF paginates, prints predictably and opens the same way everywhere, which is usually all that is wanted.

Wrapping and pagination

Long lines are wrapped at word boundaries to fit the page width, and the text is broken into pages with optional numbering. Line breaks in your file are respected, so paragraphs and blank lines survive.

Helvetica or Courier

Courier is monospaced, which matters more than it sounds: log files, code and anything lined up with spaces only makes sense in a monospaced face. For prose, Helvetica is easier to read.

The character set limitation, stated plainly

The fonts built into the PDF standard cover Latin-1 only. Emoji, Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Hebrew cannot be drawn with them, and characters outside the range are replaced with a question mark. The summary tells you exactly how many were replaced, so you are never left to discover it in the output. Embedding a full Unicode font would mean shipping a multi-megabyte font file and navigating its licence, which is not a fair trade for a converter most people use on English text.

Markdown and CSV

Both are accepted as plain text, and both come out as text — no headings are rendered and no table is drawn. For Markdown with formatting, convert it to HTML first and use the HTML to PDF tool.

FAQ

TXT to PDF — questions

Is the text selectable?

Yes. It is drawn as real text, so the PDF is searchable and copyable.

Why were some characters replaced with a question mark?

The PDF standard fonts only cover Latin-1. Emoji and non-Latin scripts cannot be drawn, and the summary reports how many were affected.

Which typeface should I choose?

Courier for logs, code or anything aligned with spaces. Helvetica for prose.

Does it handle very large files?

Yes, though a very long file makes a very long PDF and takes a moment.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It is read and converted in your browser.
