How it works

The question before every final is the same one: what do I actually need? It is a short calculation, but it is easy to get backwards, and the answer changes how you spend the week.

The calculation

Your existing grade counts for everything the final does not. If the final is worth 30%, the work you have already done is worth 70%, and the required mark is whatever makes those two add up to your target. The tool rearranges that and gives you the number.

Three answers, not one

As well as the mark you need, you are shown the best and worst grades still reachable — what you would finish on with full marks, and what you would finish on with zero. Those bracket the outcome, and they are often more reassuring, or more clarifying, than the target itself.

When the answer is over 100

Sometimes the target is no longer reachable, and the tool says so plainly rather than returning a number above full marks and letting you work it out. Better to know now.

When you have already done it

If even zero on the final leaves you above your target, it says that too. It happens more often than people expect when the final carries a small weight.

FAQ

Grade calculator — questions

What if the final is worth 100%?

Then the required mark equals your target, because nothing else counts. The calculator handles it.

Does it work for any grading scale?

It works in percentages. If your institution uses letters, convert your target to its percentage band first.

What if my course has several remaining assessments?

Treat them together as one block and enter their combined weight. The required mark is then the average you need across them.

Why is the answer above 100%?

Because the target is not reachable with the marks still available. The tool says so rather than hiding it.

Is anything uploaded?

No. It runs entirely in your browser.
