How it works
Flooring is sold by the square metre, rooms are measured in feet, and the quote comes back in square yards. The area is easy; it is the units that cause the trouble. This gives you all of them at once so nothing has to be converted by hand.
Measure in any unit
Enter your measurements in feet, metres, inches, centimetres or yards, and the area comes back in square feet, square metres, square yards, square inches and acres simultaneously. Mixing up a conversion factor is the usual way these calculations go wrong.
Three shapes
Rectangles and squares, circles by diameter, and triangles by base and height. Between them they cover most rooms, gardens, patios and plots. For an awkward shape, split it into rectangles, work out each and add them — that is what a surveyor does too.
Perimeter as well
For rectangles and circles the perimeter is given alongside the area, because it is what you need for skirting board, edging, fencing or trim, and it is a different calculation people often forget they also need.
Buying materials
Order more than the area suggests. Flooring, tile and turf all need an allowance for cuts, waste and pattern matching — usually between 5% and 15% depending on the material and the room's shape. This tool gives you the true area; the allowance is a judgement about the job.
Square footage calculator — questions
How do I handle an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, calculate each and add them together.
Does the circle take a radius or a diameter?
A diameter, because that is what is easier to measure. It is halved internally.
How much extra material should I order?
Typically 5% to 15% over the area for cuts and waste, depending on the material and the shape of the room. The right figure is a judgement about the job, so the tool does not guess it for you.
Can I mix units?
Not in one calculation — pick the unit your measurements are in. The results are given in every unit regardless.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. It runs in your browser.
