About images conversion
Image conversion needs no download at all: your browser already reads PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP and writes PNG and JPG itself, and most browsers also write WebP. BMP and ICO files are written by a few lines of this site's own code. That makes it instant, and it means the picture never leaves your computer.
When format actually matters
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it right for logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text. JPG throws away detail your eye is least likely to miss, which makes it far smaller and right for photographs — but visibly messy on fine text. WebP is the modern option that does both jobs better, typically 30–70% smaller than PNG with transparency intact, at the cost of older software sometimes refusing to open it.
The lossy trap
Every save to JPG or WebP discards information permanently. Converting a JPG to PNG makes the file lossless from that point on, but it cannot recover what the original JPG already threw away. If you are going to edit an image repeatedly, work in PNG and export to JPG once at the end.
Transparency
Only PNG, WebP, GIF and ICO carry an alpha channel. Convert any of them to JPG or BMP and the transparent areas are filled with white, because those formats have nowhere to store it. This converter does that fill deliberately rather than leaving black boxes.
