How it works
Vocal removal has a reputation for disappointing people, and it is worth being straight about why before you try it. The technique here is phase cancellation, which is old, free and instant — and is not the machine-learning separation that streaming demos use.
How it works
In most mixes the lead vocal is panned dead centre, meaning it is identical in the left and right channels. Subtracting one channel from the other cancels anything identical in both, which takes the vocal with it.
What else disappears
Everything else panned centre goes too — usually the bass guitar and the kick drum, which is why the result often sounds thin and hollow. That is not a fault in the processing; it is what the technique does.
When it will not work at all
A mono recording has nothing to cancel against. A vocal panned off-centre, double-tracked, or drenched in stereo reverb survives, because those parts are not identical in both channels. Live recordings and older mixes rarely work well.
What would work better
Proper source separation uses a trained model to identify a voice rather than exploiting stereo geometry, and it produces dramatically better results. It needs a large model download and serious processing, which this site does not do. If phase cancellation disappoints you, that is the reason, and no setting here will fix it.
Remove vocals from a song — questions
Why does the result sound thin?
Cancelling the centre also removes the bass and kick drum, which sit there too.
It did not remove the vocal at all — why?
The vocal is probably not centred, is double-tracked, or has heavy stereo reverb. Mono files cannot be processed this way at all.
Is this the same as AI stem separation?
No. This is phase cancellation, which is instant and free but far cruder. Proper separation needs a trained model this site does not run.
Is my music uploaded?
No. It is processed in your browser.
